LAKE RAY ROBERTS FISHING REPORT:
March 7th, 2010
Well the fishing is finally starting to pick up on Ray Roberts. The water is still plenty cold. A bit muddy, but not too bad though. The lake is still about a foot high and they are working on getting it back to normal pool. All this rain we keep getting isn't helping though. The best pattern this week was a 1/2 oz trap worked around some grass or secondary and main lake points with some rock on them. With the colder temps we are catching a bunch of fish, but we are catching some really nice fish. Yesterday we had 3 fish over 5lbs, with one over 6lbs. Robby got his first bass ever. He is 10 years old and caught a 5lb 15oz bass. What a great start.
The sand bass fishing has been really good as well. They are still in the winter holes. Some have started to move up the lake. I still like a 1oz slab with some white/chartrues and a red throat. That color is hard to beat out there. I still have dates left in March and April. Give me a call or email me and we can set something up. Thanks.
January 1st, 2010
Another year is upon us. Waiting for this cold weather to get out of here. Spring will be here before we know it. I haven't been on the lake much the past few weeks with the holidays and our vacation. Just got back from a cruise with family and friends. We had a great time. It will be interesting this spring to see what kind of weights are brought in to the scales, now that there are tournaments on the lake again. Last fall folks struggled to find the fish. I expect to see some big bags brought in this spring. It wouldn't suprise me to see a share lunker brought in as well this spring. Last spring was such a good big fish spring and plus now we will have more anglers on the water, could be interesting. I have to wish good luck to one of my customers. He is the new bachelor, Jake Pavelka. Him and his dad have been fishing with me for a few years now. Jake is really a nice guy. Plus he caught his personal best with me. A 9lb 13oz beauty.
I want to thank all my customer for another good year in 2009. I know with the economy the way it was it could have been a lot tougher. So thanks again. Looking forward to another good year in 2010. Thanks. Dannie.
October 22nd, 2009
Well it has been a while since I updating a report on my website. I am sorry about that. I post reports almost on a weekly basis on many of the fishing forums around, but don't do a good job of posting on my own site. As many of you know they took the slot off of Ray Roberts September 1st. There has been a steady flow of tournaments on the lake. As many as 8 one Saturday a few weeks ago. So the bass are getting a bunch of fishing pressure this fall. Black bass fishing has been off and on. We have had some really good days, but we have had our share of tough days too. The lake is above pool right now. Actually 2 feet high and still rising a little from the rains the last 2 days. That is a good thing for the shallow bite. All the little willows are in the water now and we know how bass love them. Spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and frogs have been working around them. Even some shallow cranks have worked for us. The grass is coming back in force on the South end of the lake. The fish are relating to it as well. Traps and flukes have produced the best for us in the grass. With the rains some of the lake is stained and even muddy in a few places. This should leave us in great shape for next spring. The fall also brings out the catfish. The birds have started showing up and the catfish bite has improved. This will remain good until it is just to cold for us to go fishing.
If you are wanting to get in on the fall fishing just give me a call or shoot me an email.
April 13th, 2009
Well the spawn is well underway on Roberts. The lake is still a little over 3 feet low. The last couple rains haven't made any difference. If there is a plus side to the lake being low is the grass. I have been finding grass growing in many different places on the lake. Now it is still in the early stages. The fish aren't really relating to it. For the most part they are relating to wood and structure. We are having a really good spring too. Numbers and big fish, up to 10lbs 5oz. Coby was really pumped. The new Revenge Viberator has really produced for us this spring. Both the red craw and chartruese/white have worked the best. Of course we are still catching a bunch of fish on a split shot rigged watermelon/red or gold fluke. Just make sure you are fishing it as slow as you can stand it. That is the key. With as many cold fronts as we have had the last couple weeks we will still have plenty of fish spawning in May. Even today we only had 58 to 60 degree water temps.
If you are wanting to get in on the spawning action I still have a couple dates late in April and early May. Give me a call or shoot me an email.
February 17th, 2009
Its hard to believe February is half way over. 2009 is well on its way. Looking forward to another good year on Lake Ray Roberts. As most of you know January can be pretty tough on Roberts, for the black bass anyway. Things are starting to shape up though. Found some 54 degree water and the trap bite is picking up. Throw either a red trap or a gold trap and you should be able to get bit. Focusing mainly on main lake points, secondary points and a few drains. Having some rock around helps too. I have found a little grass in some areas, so that will help this spring. If you are looking for a good fish right now then just tie on the old black/blue jig and keep it wet. The sand bass are still on their winter holes. Catching them on 1oz slabs. Have found a few making their way up the major creeks on long points.
Looking forward to our 2009 tournament season as well. I have a new sponsor this year as well, Event Buy Power. If your company needs any help connecting its products with people they can definetly help. Give me a call or shoot me an email to set up a guided fishing trip on Ray Roberts this spring.
December 17th, 2008
Well another year is about to come and go. It seems like they just keep going by faster and faster. 2008 was another really good year on Roberts, both fishing wise and my business. So I thank everyone that had a part in that. I caught my personal best on Roberts this year. She was 11lb 13oz. The lake fished different this year with the milfoil missing. There are a few places where it is coming back. That high water last year did a number on it. It will be back though. We probably caught more fish this year on a deep diving crankbait than I ever have on Roberts before. Lots of fun. Of course up there, you better have a good lure retriever. I'm looking forward to 2009. The lake is in pretty good shape. We are a little over 2 feet low, which is great compared to the lakes around us. The last few years we have had really good spawns. Plus the grass is coming back. Lot's of positives for the lake. It looks like the slot is probably going to be lifted from the lake in September. That will be good for the local economy, with the bass clubs coming back to the lake.
Again, thanks everyone for making 08 another good year.
August 25th, 2008
Fall is fast approaching. The lake is in great shape. We are only 6 inches low after the recent rains. I was hoping we would get back to normal pool, but fell a little short. Water temps did come down from the rains and cooler temps. I am seeing low to mid 80's on most of the lake. The black bass fishing has been good to excellent. At least for numbers. There is a ton of good size bait in the lake right now. I have seen more schooling bass this summer, than I have over the last 4 summers. Most of our fish are coming on carolin rigged lizards. Even around the schooling fish we are using the carolina rigs. Trying to work the bottom for bigger fish. We do have a topwater handy when around them. Pop-r's and Vixen's are working best. I am using them early in the mornings as well. Main lake points and secondary points have been the most productive for us. The shad should start to migrate into the creeks before long. I expect the shallow water bite to get really good around the flooded willows as well. Topwater, spinnerbaits and a trap should produce well around them.
This summer the sand bass fishing was about as good as it gets. It seemed they were everywhere. The schooling action is starting to slow a little, with the cooler temps. We are catching them very well on slabs on long points and deep road beds. The crappie fishing was a little tougher this summer, than I would have liked, but that is fixing to change. Fall crappie fishing is very good on Ray Roberts. It is almost time to start fishing for the big blue cats as well. Last fall and winter I had the best catfishing I had seen. I expect this year to be even better.
If you are wanting to get on some good fall time fishing give me a call. It is right around the corner.
May 25th, 2008
The lake is in great shape. The lake is at normal level. The water clarity is the best it has been all year. The bass are done spawning and moving to their summer haunts. There are many different patterns working on the lake. Since the grass isn't as thick as it normally is this time of year, we are fishing a little different. Early we are working topwaters. Vixen's, pop-r's, and buzzbaits are working early. On the windy days the buzzbait has proven to be better. After that we are using a lot of crankbaits, carolina rigs, and football head jigs. We are catching some shallow on cranks, but we are also throwing deep diving cranks. Some of the better fish are coming on the deeper diving baits. Anything shad pattern is working. Sexy Shad has produced well. On the caroling rig I am using 8" watermelon/red lizards, chartruese pepper stud fries, and watermelon/candy trick worms. When jig fishing we are trying to imitate a crawdad. I really don't see this pattern changing much over the next month.
If you are looking to take some fish home, this is the time of year to do it. Our sand bass population has exploded, it seems. We have been getting EASY limits. Early they are on any windy point shallow, chasing shad. As the day goes we move deep with 1oz slabs. The crappie are biting really well on the brush piles. Both minnows and jigs are producing well. The channel cats are spawing. I had two catfish trips and cleaned 40 -50 nice size channels each trip. And they were half day trips. We are using danny kings punch bait under a cork in very shallow water.
I have always said May and June are two of my favorite months on Roberts. It just seems everything is biting this time of year. Give me a call if you want to take advantage of the good fishing. Thanks.
April 16th, 2008
Well spring is finally here. March was a bear, as well as the winds. The lake is in pretty good shape. We are still a little over a foot high. Most areas are stained, but improving. The bass fishing has been really good the last couple weeks. I caught my peronal best April 2nd. She weighed 11 pounds 13 ounces. I caught her on a watermelon/red fluke, in 2 feet of water. Weightless soft plastics have been working best for us. When the wind is high, we are using a split shot up about 12 inches from the bait. The key has been to work them very slow. Anything green with some red in it will get you bit. We are starting to catch a few on buzzbaits as well. The next full moon we have should be our major spawn. We will still have fish spawning in May all over the lake. May should be incredible.
The sand bass are showing back up on the main lake. You can look for the birds working and they are there. They have even been schooling in some places. The crappie are almost done with their spawn as well and are moving back to the brush piles.
If you are looking for a guided trip on Roberts give me a call. I am a full time guide on Roberts alone and am up there almost every day. Thanks. Dannie

Boy what a great year we had on Roberts. It was a different year with the lake level going from 8 feet low to 8 feet high and now finally back to normal. This was my busiest year yet guiding and I want to thank everyone that took a trip with me. My family and I sure appreciate the support. I also want to thank my sponsors. They make my job a lot easier.
The fishing is still pretty good on Roberts. The water temps are in the mid 50's and the fishing should stay steady until that temp drops into the 40's. The black bass are mainly coming on moving baits. Rattletraps and crankbaits are working best. I still like the XPS Rattleshad by Bass Pro and the old Bill Lewis. We are using chrome/blue or a red trap. The crankbait that is working best for me is a Bandit 200 in Mistake. That has always been a good cold water bait for me. The key to fishing both of these baits is finding the right retrieve. Lately we have been using more of a start and stop retrieve. We aren't just chunking it out and reeling it in. As the water cools this always produces for me. If you want to pick apart some timber then it is jig time. I like a 5/16oz Stinger jig or a Revenge jig. You can't go wrong with black/blue, but black/brown/amber works really well on Roberts too. This time of year we aren't looking for big numbers, but the average size of the fish we catch are nice. The afternoon bite is going to be better than the morning bite as well.
The catfishing is just incredible, as it usually is for me in the fall and early winter. Monday Nov. 27th we had a 35lb blue cat and yesterday we had a 21lb blue. Our numbers are down from the 30-40 fish mornings, but we are still catching close to 20 a morning. If you are looking for some great action, now is the time, before it gets too cold. The sandbass are doing their normal thing for this time of year. They are on their winter holes. We are mainly using a white/chartrues/red 1oz slab to get them out of 30 to 35 feet of water on deep humps, close to the main lake.
Spring dates are already starting to book up. I have gift certificates available for the special chrismas gift. I hope everyone has a great holiday and is safe.
July 8th, 2007
We are enjoying a bunch of new water this summer. Boy how things are different from last summer. The lake is still 8 feet HIGH, but the water is clear. All the boat ramps are closed. I have rented a slip at the marina and am open for business. The fishing has been very good. That goes for the black bass, the crappie and the sand bass. The blacks are up in all the flooded willow bushes. The best baits have been a watermelon/gold fluke and a sweet beaver fished around the willows. Most of the bites are coming along the edges of the willows. They don't seem to be buried up in the bushes. I am concentrating on the main lake and the mouths of the major creeks. Points and secondary points seem to be producing the best. We are catching a few early on buzzbaits and spinnerbaits. The shaky head bite is starting to turn on as well. A Reaction Innovations Flirt 4.95 is working very well. Both in the Flirt and Beaver we are using Sprayed Grass or the color Juicy.
The sand bass action has been getting better and better. The schooling action has been good early and late. I like a clear tiny or baby torpedo. As the warmer weather sets in and the rains stop, the schooling action will get better. If you like catching a lot of fish this is the time to go. The crappie fishing is very good right now. The crappie are getting very little pressure on the brush piles, since noone can get on the water, and they are stacked up on them. Minnows have been working the best.
If you are looking for a guided trip on Lake Ray Roberts give me a call or email me.

We are full swing into all the stages of the spawn on Roberts right now. Some fish are already done spawning and are on a good post-spawn topwater pattern. We still have fish on beds, and some are yet to move up. Ray Roberts always has a late spawn. This year it seems even later with the wacky weather we have had this spring. Just this past Sunday I caught my new personal best on Roberts. She weighed in at, 11lb's 5oz's. She was already spawned out, or very near to being done. Buzzbaits and horney toads are starting to catch some nice fish for us. We are fishing those around some secondary points with shallow grass. Watermelon/gold flukes and senko's are working very good around the shallow grass. We are still catching a few fish on spinnerbaits and rattletraps, but that bite should get better. Our shad have finally moved into the backs of the creeks to spawn also. The lake came up a foot last night with the heavy raines we got, and should come up another foot, leaving us around 5 feet low. There will be a lot of new flooded vegetation along the banks, which will make May a very fun month to fish.
The sand bass action has been excellent. We are catching guite a few sandies trying to school on top. They aren't schooling, like they will in July, but they are on top or just under the surface. Just watch for the gulls. My clients Monday morning caught around 60 in a hour. I cleaned 43 of the bigger ones for them. Most of those came on a buzzbait in 38 feet of water. That is a lot of fun! The crappie are pretty much done with their spawn. There are still a few late spawners in the shallows. Most of them are starting to make their way out to deeper water. May is a great month for crappie fishing. The will start to stack up on the many brush piles we have on the lake and the standing timber. During the month of May and June it is very easy to get a limit of crappie.
If you are looking for a guided trip on Lake Ray Roberts I will do my very best to make sure you have a good time and have success on the water. If you have any questions give me a call or shoot me an email.
March 1st, 2007
Spring is finally started to show up on Roberts. The best fishing is just right around the corner. The lake is currently just a little over 7 feet low. The lake had muddy up a bit, in places, with the rain we received this winter. But it is starting to clear up. These cold fronts we keep getting each week is keeping the bass from making a move. Most of the water temps I am finding now is from 54 to 58 degree. I have found a couple places with a little warmer water. We still aren't catch big numbers of bass yet, but the fish we are catching are big. Everyday, in the last week, we have had a least a 6 pounder. Most of our fish are coming on either a black/blue jig or a black/brown/amber jig fished around standing timber in creek channels. Both Red rattletraps and chatterbaits, fished around grass edges, have accounted for the rest of the fish we are catching. I finally did catch a spinnerbait fish yesterday. Even with the lake being low, the grass is in great shape. I am finding a lot of grass, all the way out to 6 feet in some areas. I am really looking forward to this spawn, as I think we are in for a good one.
The sand bass fishing is very good right now as well. They are still out in the deeper water. Most of them are coming out of 30 feet of water. 1 oz critter getter slabs is still working for us. Chartruese being the best color.
If you are looking for a guided trip on Lake Ray Roberts I will do my very best to make sure you have a good time and have success on the water. If you have any questions give me a call or shoot me an email. I still have a few weekdays open in March and a couple of Saturday afternoons available. Good luck on the water and be safe.
