LAKE RAY ROBERTS FISHING REPORT:

April 16th, 2008

Well spring is finally here. March was a bear, as well as the winds. The lake is in pretty good shape. We are still a little over a foot high. Most areas are stained, but improving. The bass fishing has been really good the last couple weeks. I caught my peronal best April 2nd. She weighed 11 pounds 13 ounces. I caught her on a watermelon/red fluke, in 2 feet of water. Weightless soft plastics have been working best for us. When the wind is high, we are using a split shot up about 12 inches from the bait. The key has been to work them very slow. Anything green with some red in it will get you bit. We are starting to catch a few on buzzbaits as well. The next full moon we have should be our major spawn. We will still have fish spawning in May all over the lake. May should be incredible.

The sand bass are showing back up on the main lake. You can look for the birds working and they are there. They have even been schooling in some places. The crappie are almost done with their spawn as well and are moving back to the brush piles.

If you are looking for a guided trip on Roberts give me a call. I am a full time guide on Roberts alone and am up there almost every day. Thanks. Dannie

Boy what a great year we had on Roberts. It was a different year with the lake level going from 8 feet low to 8 feet high and now finally back to normal. This was my busiest year yet guiding and I want to thank everyone that took a trip with me. My family and I sure appreciate the support. I also want to thank my sponsors. They make my job a lot easier.

The fishing is still pretty good on Roberts. The water temps are in the mid 50's and the fishing should stay steady until that temp drops into the 40's. The black bass are mainly coming on moving baits. Rattletraps and crankbaits are working best. I still like the XPS Rattleshad by Bass Pro and the old Bill Lewis. We are using chrome/blue or a red trap. The crankbait that is working best for me is a Bandit 200 in Mistake. That has always been a good cold water bait for me. The key to fishing both of these baits is finding the right retrieve. Lately we have been using more of a start and stop retrieve. We aren't just chunking it out and reeling it in. As the water cools this always produces for me. If you want to pick apart some timber then it is jig time. I like a 5/16oz Stinger jig or a Revenge jig. You can't go wrong with black/blue, but black/brown/amber works really well on Roberts too. This time of year we aren't looking for big numbers, but the average size of the fish we catch are nice. The afternoon bite is going to be better than the morning bite as well.

The catfishing is just incredible, as it usually is for me in the fall and early winter. Monday Nov. 27th we had a 35lb blue cat and yesterday we had a 21lb blue. Our numbers are down from the 30-40 fish mornings, but we are still catching close to 20 a morning. If you are looking for some great action, now is the time, before it gets too cold. The sandbass are doing their normal thing for this time of year. They are on their winter holes. We are mainly using a white/chartrues/red 1oz slab to get them out of 30 to 35 feet of water on deep humps, close to the main lake.

Spring dates are already starting to book up. I have gift certificates available for the special chrismas gift. I hope everyone has a great holiday and is safe.

We are enjoying a bunch of new water this summer. Boy how things are different from last summer. The lake is still 8 feet HIGH, but the water is clear. All the boat ramps are closed. I have rented a slip at the marina and am open for business. The fishing has been very good. That goes for the black bass, the crappie and the sand bass. The blacks are up in all the flooded willow bushes. The best baits have been a watermelon/gold fluke and a sweet beaver fished around the willows. Most of the bites are coming along the edges of the willows. They don't seem to be buried up in the bushes. I am concentrating on the main lake and the mouths of the major creeks. Points and secondary points seem to be producing the best. We are catching a few early on buzzbaits and spinnerbaits. The shaky head bite is starting to turn on as well. A Reaction Innovations Flirt 4.95 is working very well. Both in the Flirt and Beaver we are using Sprayed Grass or the color Juicy.

The sand bass action has been getting better and better. The schooling action has been good early and late. I like a clear tiny or baby torpedo. As the warmer weather sets in and the rains stop, the schooling action will get better. If you like catching a lot of fish this is the time to go. The crappie fishing is very good right now. The crappie are getting very little pressure on the brush piles, since noone can get on the water, and they are stacked up on them. Minnows have been working the best.

We are full swing into all the stages of the spawn on Roberts right now. Some fish are already done spawning and are on a good post-spawn topwater pattern. We still have fish on beds, and some are yet to move up. Ray Roberts always has a late spawn. This year it seems even later with the wacky weather we have had this spring. Just this past Sunday I caught my new personal best on Roberts. She weighed in at, 11lb's 5oz's. She was already spawned out, or very near to being done. Buzzbaits and horney toads are starting to catch some nice fish for us. We are fishing those around some secondary points with shallow grass. Watermelon/gold flukes and senko's are working very good around the shallow grass. We are still catching a few fish on spinnerbaits and rattletraps, but that bite should get better. Our shad have finally moved into the backs of the creeks to spawn also. The lake came up a foot last night with the heavy raines we got, and should come up another foot, leaving us around 5 feet low. There will be a lot of new flooded vegetation along the banks, which will make May a very fun month to fish.

The sand bass action has been excellent. We are catching guite a few sandies trying to school on top. They aren't schooling, like they will in July, but they are on top or just under the surface. Just watch for the gulls. My clients Monday morning caught around 60 in a hour. I cleaned 43 of the bigger ones for them. Most of those came on a buzzbait in 38 feet of water. That is a lot of fun! The crappie are pretty much done with their spawn. There are still a few late spawners in the shallows. Most of them are starting to make their way out to deeper water. May is a great month for crappie fishing. The will start to stack up on the many brush piles we have on the lake and the standing timber. During the month of May and June it is very easy to get a limit of crappie.

March 1st, 2007

Spring is finally started to show up on Roberts. The best fishing is just right around the corner. The lake is currently just a little over 7 feet low. The lake had muddy up a bit, in places, with the rain we received this winter. But it is starting to clear up. These cold fronts we keep getting each week is keeping the bass from making a move. Most of the water temps I am finding now is from 54 to 58 degree. I have found a couple places with a little warmer water. We still aren't catch big numbers of bass yet, but the fish we are catching are big. Everyday, in the last week, we have had a least a 6 pounder. Most of our fish are coming on either a black/blue jig or a black/brown/amber jig fished around standing timber in creek channels. Both Red rattletraps and chatterbaits, fished around grass edges, have accounted for the rest of the fish we are catching. I finally did catch a spinnerbait fish yesterday. Even with the lake being low, the grass is in great shape. I am finding a lot of grass, all the way out to 6 feet in some areas. I am really looking forward to this spawn, as I think we are in for a good one.

The sand bass fishing is very good right now as well. They are still out in the deeper water. Most of them are coming out of 30 feet of water. 1 oz critter getter slabs is still working for us. Chartruese being the best color.

If you are looking for a guided trip on Lake Ray Roberts I will do my very best to make sure you have a good time and have success on the water. If you have any questions give me a call or shoot me an email. I still have a few weekdays open in March and a couple of Saturday afternoons available. Good luck on the water and be safe.

December 4th, 2006

Well we are at the end of another great year of fishing on Lake Ray Roberts. The lake is currently 8 feet low. The recent rains brought the lake up 6 inches, but the cold fronts have really dropped the water temps. On the main lake we are seeing temps around the mid 50's, but the back of the coves it has been as low as 37 degrees. We had some surface ice the morning of the 2nd in the very back of a creek. That is only the second time I have seen that. Needless to say the colder temps have had a negative impact on the bass fishing. During the winter months on Ray Roberts during a full day trip we are looking for a handful of bites all day. Are numbers may be down this time of year, but we do catch some really nice fish. I am using a 1/2 oz red rattle trap around the deepest edges of the grass on the main lake with some success. If you want to concentrate on a big fish, then you need to be pitching a 1/2oz black/blue jig in the timber along the creek channels in the mouths of the major creeks.

The hot fishing on Lake Ray Roberts right now is for big catfish, mainly blues. The last six weeks we have been filling the boat with catfish. We have had both good numbers and size (two over 30 pounds last Sunday). The nice folks from the tv show Hunt Sleep Fish, out of Oklahoma, came down last week and we filmed an episode on catfishing. Fortunelty the catfish cooperated and we had 25 or 30 fish on camera by 9:00 that morning. It should air in the next two weeks. The cold front this week slowed that bite down for us Saturday morning. The water temp where we are catching them dropped 15 degrees, but with some warmer days forecasted for this week, I look for that bite to pick back up.

The sand bass fishing is very good right now as well. It is common place for us to put limits in the boat this time of year. On the main lake you just need to find the gulls and the sand bass will be there. We are using 1oz Critter Gitter slabs in a shad pattern or chratruese. The last week with the cooler temps the chartruese color has been working best.

If you are looking for a guided trip on Lake Ray Roberts I will do my very best to make sure you have a good time and have success on the water. If you have any questions give me a call or shoot me an email. Good luck on the water and be safe.
